The short answer
Scalenut is the cheaper way to get articles written, by a wide margin. Its plans include articles produced by Cruise Mode, 5 a month on Starter, 30 on Plus, and 75 on Professional, doubled on the annual offer running at $24, $36, and $80 a month, plus the same count again for rewriting existing pages. Surfer SEO meters documents you create or optimize (10 a month at $49, 30 on Standard and Pro) and sells articles written by Surfer AI separately, in bundles marketed as low as $9 each.
Two documented limits pull the other way. Scalenut's help centre states that the software currently caters solely to the English language, and answers plainly that it does not offer an API, with no MCP server on its site. Surfer's core tools work in any language, as does Surfer AI, and its API arrives on the $299 Peace of Mind plan. If your content is not in English, the choice is made for you.
Neither writes on a schedule. Scalenut's Cruise Mode drafts an article in five steps once you start it, and its WordPress integration schedules when a finished post goes live, not when writing happens; Surfer bulk-generates when triggered. Timothe's Growth Calendar writes on the schedule itself, and does not replace either tool's content scoring or AI visibility tracking.

You publish in more than one language, or you want the more established optimizer. Surfer's core tools run in any language, as does Surfer AI; plans are $49 to $299 a month billed yearly with real-time SERP guidelines, automatic internal linking from Pro, WordPress publishing, and mention tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI.
