PNG screenshots weigh more than they look: the AVIF payoff
Documentation pages, changelogs, and tutorial posts accumulate PNG screenshots fast, and each full-window capture on a retina display can run from several hundred kilobytes to a few megabytes. PNG stores every pixel losslessly, which is exactly the wrong economics for photographic content and busy interfaces. Re-encoded as AVIF, photographic PNGs often shrink by 80% or more, and typical UI screenshots land 50 to 80% smaller at high quality settings.
AVIF also supports an alpha channel just as PNG does, so transparency is not a reason to stay away: transparent-background logos and cutouts have a native representation in the target format.
Keeping crisp UI text sharp: AVIF quality settings for screenshots
Lossy compression spends bits where the eye forgives, and small interface text, hairline borders, and 1px dividers are where artifacts surface first. For screenshots that contain fine text, keep the quality slider high, around 85 or above, and check the result at 100% zoom before publishing; the size saving remains substantial even at that level. Photographic PNGs without hard edges tolerate mid-range settings and shrink further. If a file must remain pixel-exact, for archival masters or images headed into further editing, it should stay PNG rather than move to a lossy AVIF.
