What is this WAV to FLAC converter?

FLAC holds the same audio as WAV in about half the space

FLAC compresses PCM audio the way ZIP compresses documents: every sample survives, and decoding returns the exact WAV. The saving depends on content. Typical results run 40 to 60% smaller; interviews, voiceovers and anything with pauses compress hardest, while dense, loud music gives back the least. A 100MB spoken-word WAV commonly lands between 35 and 50MB as FLAC.

Because nothing is discarded, there is no bitrate to choose and no quality decision to second-guess. The only trade is CPU time to pack and unpack, which modern machines barely notice.

Why FLAC is the right shelf for finished WAV recordings

The conversion makes sense at the archive step: finished mixes, stem backups, interview and session masters that must stay lossless but no longer need to be open in an editor daily. FLAC also stores an MD5 checksum of the raw audio inside the file, so years later you can verify the archive still decodes to exactly what you stored.

Keep active projects in WAV, since that is what every DAW and plugin chain expects, and move material to FLAC once it is done. When some tool later demands WAV again, decode a copy; the round trip is lossless in both directions.

Lossy vs lossless audio

WAV and FLAC are lossless — they preserve the original waveform exactly (FLAC is compressed, WAV is not). MP3, M4A (AAC) and OGG are lossy: they shrink the file by discarding inaudible detail, and the quality preset controls the bitrate. Converting a lossy file to a lossless format can't recover quality that was already lost. One special case: converting to M4A when the source is already AAC just repackages the container (a lossless remux) — instant and bit-exact.
