What is this MP4 to MOV converter?

MP4 and MOV are close relatives, and that pays off
The MP4 standard was built on Apple's QuickTime file format, so the two containers structure video the same way and both hold H.264 natively. That shared ancestry makes this one of the lightest conversions there is: when your MP4 carries H.264, which covers the vast majority of phone clips, camera files, and editor exports, the streams are copied straight into the .mov wrapper without being touched. The remux finishes in seconds, the picture stays bit-identical to the source, and the size shifts only by container overhead.
In other words, nothing about your footage changes except the label on the box, and for certain Mac-centric destinations that label is the whole point.
Where a .mov is expected: Final Cut, Compressor, delivery specs
MOV remains the house format of Apple's production tools. Final Cut Pro and Compressor read MP4 too, but plenty of templates, watch folders, and agency delivery specs are written around QuickTime files, and some older Mac utilities filter open dialogs by extension. Handing over a .mov removes that entire class of friction, which is why post houses and broadcast clients often standardize on it.
One caution: a rewrapped H.264 MOV is not a ProRes MOV. If a delivery spec names ProRes 422 or 4444 explicitly, it wants that codec's much larger, edit-friendly files, and a container change alone will not satisfy it. If the spec just says .mov, an H.264 MOV is normally exactly what is meant.
How to use it

Lossless remux vs re-encoding
MP4 and MOV are containers — what matters is the video codec inside. When the codec already fits MOV, this tool just repackages it (a "remux"): instant and completely lossless. Only when the codec isn't compatible — most often anything involving WebM — does it re-encode the video locally, which takes longer and is where the quality preset applies.
