Editors want WAV, even though M4A plays everywhere
DAWs, video editors like Premiere and DaVinci Resolve, broadcast playout systems, and sampler hardware all work in PCM internally. Feed them a compressed M4A and they either decode it on the fly or refuse it: scrubbing gets sluggish, waveform drawing lags, and a few systems simply skip the file. Decoding once to WAV removes the variable; every cut lands on an exact sample, and every tool of the last three decades opens it.
The classic case is the iPhone voice memo headed into a transcript-and-edit workflow: convert to WAV, edit with precision, and export whatever the destination needs from the finished session.
Budget for the size jump from M4A to PCM
Uncompressed stereo at 44.1kHz/16-bit costs about 10MB per minute, so a 5-minute song grows to roughly 50MB and an hour-long interview to around 600MB; mono halves those numbers. A typical 128kbps M4A expands about tenfold.
None of that buys fidelity. Decoding reproduces exactly what the AAC encoder kept, and detail it discarded at recording time is not recoverable by any format change. The WAV is a disposable working copy: keep the compact M4A as the source and regenerate PCM whenever a project calls for it.

Lossy vs lossless audio
WAV and FLAC are lossless — they preserve the original waveform exactly (FLAC is compressed, WAV is not). MP3, M4A (AAC) and OGG are lossy: they shrink the file by discarding inaudible detail, and the quality preset controls the bitrate. Converting a lossy file to a lossless format can't recover quality that was already lost. One special case: converting to M4A when the source is already AAC just repackages the container (a lossless remux) — instant and bit-exact.
