Check text readability

Text tools

Check English copy with Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade. For Japanese, review sentence length, script ratios, and long-sentence warnings without applying a misleading English grade.

Guide

What is the text readability checker?

The text readability checker uses English-specific formulas for English text and separate structural diagnostics for Japanese text, so each language receives an appropriate kind of feedback.

LanguageMain outputInterpretation
EnglishFlesch Reading EaseHigher values generally indicate easier English prose
EnglishFlesch-Kincaid GradeApproximate US school grade needed to read the prose
JapaneseSentence lengthShows average, maximum, and sentences over the review threshold
JapaneseScript ratiosShows the share of kanji, hiragana, katakana, Latin, and other characters

When it comes in handy

  • Simplifying landing-page copy for a broad audience.
  • Reviewing an email or sales document before sending it.
  • Finding unusually long Japanese sentences that may hide the main point.
  • Comparing drafts while keeping the target reader in mind.

How to use

  1. Paste the text you want to review.
  2. Keep automatic language detection on, or select English or Japanese.
  3. For English, review Reading Ease, grade level, sentence length, and complex words.
  4. For Japanese, review sentence length, script ratios, and the highlighted long sentences.
  5. Edit the original text and compare the updated result.

Example: "The cat sat on the mat. It was easy to see." produces an easier English score than a sentence filled with long specialist terminology.

Notes

  • Flesch formulas are designed for English and are never applied to Japanese.
  • English syllables and sentence boundaries are estimated, so scores can differ from another editor.
  • Japanese results are structural editing signals, not a standardized reading grade.
  • A difficult score can be appropriate for a specialist audience. Judge the result against the reader and task.
  • Use the reading time estimator when you need an approximate time to finish the text.
