Opus voice notes travel badly outside chat apps
Opus is the codec behind most of today's voice messaging: WhatsApp and Telegram voice notes, Discord call recordings, and audio pulled from YouTube all arrive as .opus or Opus-in-OGG files. Technically it is the best low-bitrate codec in common use, holding speech together at 16 to 32kbps where MP3 falls apart. Support is the catch: outside browsers and chat apps, editors, transcription services, older phones and office playback setups often cannot open it.
That is what the MP3 conversion is for. HR and legal teams archiving voice messages, journalists dropping interviews into an editor, or anyone sending a voice note to someone on an old handset gets a file that opens on the first try.
Speech needs less: 128 to 192kbps MP3 for converted voice notes
Voice recordings do not benefit from music-grade bitrates. A 128kbps MP3 already carries far more data than the 16 to 32kbps Opus source contained, so 128 to 192kbps is the sensible window; anything above stores silence in higher fidelity. At 128kbps, expect about 1MB per minute, so a five-minute WhatsApp message lands near 5MB.
For documentation workflows, convert a copy and keep the original Opus file untouched: the file you actually received is the authentic record, and the MP3 is the working copy you open, share and transcribe.
How to use it

Lossy vs lossless audio
WAV and FLAC are lossless — they preserve the original waveform exactly (FLAC is compressed, WAV is not). MP3, M4A (AAC) and OGG are lossy: they shrink the file by discarding inaudible detail, and the quality preset controls the bitrate. Converting a lossy file to a lossless format can't recover quality that was already lost. One special case: converting to M4A when the source is already AAC just repackages the container (a lossless remux) — instant and bit-exact.
