Know what your M4A holds before exporting MP3
M4A is AAC audio in an MP4 wrapper, and in practice it arrives from three places: iPhone voice memos (mono AAC around 64kbps), iTunes Store purchases (256kbps AAC), and GarageBand or Logic bounces. The conversion to MP3 exists for gatekeepers, not for sound: podcast platforms that only ingest .mp3, car systems that skip .m4a files on a USB stick, learning platforms and CMS upload forms with a hard .mp3 whitelist, and recipients on Android or older devices you cannot vet.
The source bitrate sets the ceiling. A 256kbps purchase has plenty of margin for a clean MP3; a 64kbps memo gains nothing from a lavish setting, it just needs enough to avoid further damage.
Managing the double compression from AAC into MP3
Both formats are lossy, so this transcode compresses already-compressed audio. Music deserves 256 to 320kbps on the MP3 side; below that, the second pass starts to sand down transients and stereo detail that the AAC had preserved. Spoken recordings are more forgiving: 128 to 192kbps keeps a voice memo perfectly intelligible.
Hold on to the M4A afterward. Every future export, whether a different bitrate or a different format entirely, should start from it rather than from the MP3, which is now two generations away from the microphone.

Lossy vs lossless audio
WAV and FLAC are lossless — they preserve the original waveform exactly (FLAC is compressed, WAV is not). MP3, M4A (AAC) and OGG are lossy: they shrink the file by discarding inaudible detail, and the quality preset controls the bitrate. Converting a lossy file to a lossless format can't recover quality that was already lost. One special case: converting to M4A when the source is already AAC just repackages the container (a lossless remux) — instant and bit-exact.
