Why editing and annotation workflows want PNG, not HEIC
Some photos are working material, not final output: site-inspection shots that get annotated, product photos headed for retouching, defect records attached to reports, reference images for design work. In those pipelines every save matters, and converting the HEIC to JPG would put a lossy format at the start of a chain of edits. PNG is the lossless alternative: decode the HEIC once, then crop, annotate, and re-save as often as needed without stacking new compression on top.
PNG also settles the tooling question. Design applications, annotation utilities, documentation systems, and legacy business software all ingest PNG without a plugin or codec.
Budgeting for the PNG's weight
The cost is size, and it is significant. HEIC is one of the most efficient photo formats in use; PNG's lossless compression was never designed for photographic detail. A phone photo of a few megabytes routinely becomes tens of megabytes as PNG, growth of 5 to 10 times or more. Treat the PNG as a working file inside the editing stage, and export the finished result to JPG or WebP for delivery. If a photo is only being viewed or shared, this conversion is the wrong tool; go to JPG instead.
Why won't my HEIC file open?
HEIC (HEIF) is the format iPhones save photos in by default — higher quality at a smaller size than JPEG. The catch: Windows, Android, and many websites and apps don't support it natively, so the file 'won't open' or 'can't be uploaded'. Converting to JPG (universal), PNG (lossless), or WebP (small + web-friendly) fixes that instantly.
