Whether that is worth doing is arithmetic, not ideology. On a template that renders forty product images per page, on a catalog of tens of thousands of files, or on pages with heavy traffic, a 10 to 30% reduction compounds into real bandwidth and a measurable LCP margin. For a handful of images on a low-traffic page, the gain will not be noticeable; spend the effort elsewhere.
Second-pass encoding: protecting detail the WebP kept
Most WebP files are lossy, which makes this conversion a second encoding generation. Use a high quality setting: pushing the slider down to maximize the size delta re-damages exactly the detail the WebP had preserved, and softness stacks on softness. If the original masters (RAW, PNG, or full-quality JPG exports) still exist, encoding AVIF from those gives a cleaner result than converting the WebP; direct conversion is the sensible fallback when masters are gone. And confirm the delivery path first: browsers are ready for AVIF, while desktop software and most upload forms still are not.
