MKV to AVI converter

Video tools

Convert MKV videos to AVI right in your browser — no upload, no watermark. When the codecs match it's a lossless remux; otherwise it re-encodes locally. Your video never leaves your device.

What is this MKV to AVI converter?

A free, browser-based tool that converts a MKV video to AVI. Add a file, preview it inline, and download the result. All processing happens locally in your browser, so your video is never uploaded and there is no watermark.

MKV to AVI: for the hardware that never moved on

Nobody converts to AVI for pleasure. The direction exists because certain systems refuse everything else: a signage player installed in 2009, an industrial inspection rig, a lab instrument, or corporate ingest software whose spec sheet has not changed in fifteen years. When the manual says AVI, negotiation is over. It is worth confirming that requirement in writing before converting a whole archive, because the constraint drives every downstream choice.

This converter covers exactly that case: turning modern MKV material into the container those systems ask for.

What AVI costs you, and why MP4 is usually the saner target

Be clear about the trade. AVI predates chapters, soft subtitle tracks, and dependable multi-track layouts, so those parts of an MKV simply have no place to go in the output container. And because AVI handles modern codecs poorly, this direction typically re-encodes rather than remuxes, adding a lossy generation on top of the feature loss.

That makes the decision rule simple: reach for AVI only when the receiving system explicitly demands it. For every other compatibility problem (aging TVs, mixed offices, players of unknown vintage), MP4 keeps modern codecs, plays far more widely, and loses less along the way. Keep the MKV as the master regardless.

How to use it

  1. Add a MKV file on the left (drag & drop or click) — it shows an inline preview.
  2. Pick a quality preset (used only when the video has to be re-encoded).
  3. Press “Convert & download” to get your AVI file. The first run downloads the ~30MB converter once.

Lossless remux vs re-encoding

MKV and AVI are containers — what matters is the video codec inside. When the codec already fits AVI, this tool just repackages it (a "remux"): instant and completely lossless. Only when the codec isn't compatible — most often anything involving WebM — does it re-encode the video locally, which takes longer and is where the quality preset applies.
