And because AVI handles modern codecs poorly, this direction typically re-encodes rather than remuxes, adding a lossy generation on top of the feature loss.
That makes the decision rule simple: reach for AVI only when the receiving system explicitly demands it. For every other compatibility problem (aging TVs, mixed offices, players of unknown vintage), MP4 keeps modern codecs, plays far more widely, and loses less along the way. Keep the MKV as the master regardless.

Lossless remux vs re-encoding
