What are hreflang tags?

hreflang is an attribute that tells search engines how the language/region variants of a page relate to each other. You place tags like in the so users are served the page that matches their language and region. This tool generates the full set from your URL ↔ locale pairs.

How do I write an hreflang value (the code format)?

Does hreflang need to be reciprocal?

Should I use a language code or a language-region code?

Use a language-only code (e.g. en) when language alone is enough. When the same language differs by country — currency, spelling, content — split with language plus region (e.g. en-US, en-GB). A region-only code (e.g. US) is invalid; always start with the language code.
