Why hand the DAW a WAV instead of the MP4?
Audio software wants PCM. DAWs, restoration tools, and strict transcription pipelines (court reporting and archival specs often mandate WAV) either refuse video containers or ingest them unreliably, while a WAV opens everywhere with sample-accurate seeking. Converting an MP4 interview or webinar to WAV gives you a working file you can cut, level, and noise-reduce without fighting a decoder.
Typical jobs: cleaning up interview audio before it goes back into a video edit, preparing testimony or oral-history recordings for archives, and feeding capture-card or screen-recording audio into an audio-only workflow.
Decoding AAC to PCM: what changes and what cannot
The AAC track inside an MP4 is lossy; decoding it to WAV cannot restore anything AAC threw away at record time. What you gain is different: from this point on, nothing further is lost. Every edit, export, and re-save of a PCM file is exact, where repeated lossy saves would keep degrading.
Budget for size: stereo 16-bit WAV runs about 10MB per minute (slightly more at 48kHz), so a 20-minute interview decodes to roughly 200MB and an hour tops 600MB. Treat WAV as the working copy, not the sharing copy, and trim long MP4s to the needed passage first, since inputs around 200MB stay comfortable in the browser.

Lossy vs lossless audio
WAV and FLAC are lossless — they preserve the original waveform exactly (FLAC is compressed, WAV is not). MP3, M4A (AAC) and OGG are lossy: they shrink the file by discarding inaudible detail, and the quality preset controls the bitrate. Converting a lossy file to a lossless format can't recover quality that was already lost. One special case: converting to M4A when the source is already AAC just repackages the container (a lossless remux) — instant and bit-exact.
