What is this AVI to MP3 converter?
A free, browser-based tool that extracts the audio track from a AVI video and saves it as MP3. Add a file, preview it inline, and download the result. All processing happens locally in your browser, so your file is never uploaded and there is no watermark.
AVI files age badly; the audio inside doesn't have to
AVI dates back to 1992, and the files still stored in it usually come from that long history: MiniDV tapes captured to a PC, XviD downloads from the 2000s, clips from dashcams and screen recorders that never moved past the format. Fewer players open them each year, and it is common for the picture to load with no sound at all.
The audio track tends to survive better than the container around it. Extracted as MP3, a lecture, a concert recording, or a family tape becomes a small file that plays on any phone, car stereo, or media app, which is usually all anyone still wants from those recordings.
Match the MP3 bitrate to what the AVI already holds
AVIs from the DivX era usually carry MP3 audio around 128kbps; DV camcorder captures carry uncompressed PCM instead. That difference sets the preset. From a PCM source this is the first encode ever, so 192kbps or higher preserves everything worth keeping. From an MP3 source it is a re-encode, and picking a rate at or above the original avoids stacking audible loss on top of what is already gone.
As a size reference, a 25-minute XviD file of about 190MB comes out near 24MB at 128kbps and 36MB at 192kbps. Keep sources under about 200MB; DV tape transfers are far heavier than that, so cut them into scenes first.
How to use it

- Press “Convert & download” to get your MP3 file. The first run downloads the ~30MB converter once.
Lossy vs lossless audio
WAV and FLAC are lossless — they preserve the original waveform exactly (FLAC is compressed, WAV is not). MP3, M4A (AAC) and OGG are lossy: they shrink the file by discarding inaudible detail, and the quality preset controls the bitrate. Converting a lossy file to a lossless format can't recover quality that was already lost. One special case: converting to M4A when the source is already AAC just repackages the container (a lossless remux) — instant and bit-exact.
