FLAC to MP3 converter

Audio tools

Convert FLAC audio to MP3 right in your browser — no upload, no watermark. When the codec already fits it's a lossless remux; otherwise it re-encodes locally. Your file never leaves your device.

What is this FLAC to MP3 converter?

A free, browser-based tool that converts FLAC audio to MP3. Add a file, preview it inline, and download the result. All processing happens locally in your browser, so your file is never uploaded and there is no watermark.

Why convert FLAC to MP3 at all?

FLAC is the archive format: bit-perfect, but big. A typical album rip runs 300 to 500MB in FLAC and drops to roughly a quarter of that as 320kbps MP3, with no audible difference on most playback gear. MP3 is also the one format that plays everywhere without questions: car head units, older phones, cheap Bluetooth speakers, podcast feeds, and email attachments that would bounce with a FLAC.

The sensible workflow is to keep the FLAC as your master copy and hand out MP3s. Because FLAC is lossless, you can re-export a fresh MP3 at any bitrate later; nothing is baked in.

Choosing a bitrate for music ripped from FLAC

For music, 320kbps is the safe default: at that rate, blind tests show almost nobody distinguishes the MP3 from the lossless source. Pick 192kbps when the files are destined for a phone with limited storage, and reserve lower rates for spoken word. Since the source here is lossless, this is a first-generation encode, the best case for MP3. Avoid converting the resulting MP3 again later; go back to the FLAC instead.

How to use it

  1. Add a FLAC file on the left (drag & drop or click) — it shows an inline preview.
  2. Pick a quality preset (used only for lossy targets like MP3/M4A/OGG).
  3. Press “Convert & download” to get your MP3 file. The first run downloads the ~30MB converter once.

Lossy vs lossless audio

WAV and FLAC are lossless — they preserve the original waveform exactly (FLAC is compressed, WAV is not). MP3, M4A (AAC) and OGG are lossy: they shrink the file by discarding inaudible detail, and the quality preset controls the bitrate. Converting a lossy file to a lossless format can't recover quality that was already lost. One special case: converting to M4A when the source is already AAC just repackages the container (a lossless remux) — instant and bit-exact.
