Getting AVIF out of the browser and into your editing tools
AVIF is what modern websites serve, so it is increasingly what lands in your downloads folder when you save an image for reuse. The trouble starts one step later: older Photoshop releases and plenty of other editing tools, Office applications, default viewers on older systems, and most print workflows either refuse the file or render nothing. PNG is the interchange format that entire toolchain understands, which makes this conversion the standard first move before any editing, layout, or handoff work.
A lossless unpacking of a lossy source: what PNG preserves
Most AVIF files are lossy, while PNG records the decoded pixels exactly. Converting therefore adds zero new degradation: the PNG will match what you currently see, artifact for artifact. It cannot reconstruct detail the original AVIF encode threw away, so expect a more portable image, not a cleaner one. The cost is bytes: a photographic AVIF commonly expands five to ten times once stored as PNG.
PNG is the right escape hatch when the source uses transparency (which JPG cannot represent), when more editing rounds are coming and no further loss is acceptable, or when the image is a logo, chart, or screenshot with flat color and hard edges. For an ordinary photo that only needs to be attached or uploaded somewhere, converting to JPG instead keeps the file a fraction of the size.
