M4A is the WAV export modern platforms are built around
An M4A file is AAC audio in an MP4 container, and AAC is what the current playback world runs on: it is the native format across iPhone, iPad and Mac, plays on Android and every modern browser, and is what streaming services deliver (Apple Music streams 256kbps AAC). Encoding a WAV to M4A gives you the same distribution-friendly size as MP3 with a newer codec behind it.
AAC also spends its bits better. At the same bitrate it holds high frequencies and stereo detail more cleanly than MP3, so 256kbps AAC from a lossless WAV is generally considered transparent, matching what a 320kbps MP3 achieves with fewer bits.
Choosing between M4A and MP3 for a WAV export
The decision is about your audience's hardware. If the file will live on phones, streaming platforms, YouTube uploads or modern podcast apps, M4A is the better target: equal or better quality at smaller sizes, with a 5-minute 50MB WAV landing near 9.6MB at 256kbps. If the file must survive ancient car stereos, boombox-era MP3 players or unknown conference-room gear, MP3 remains the lowest common denominator.
Either way the WAV stays the master; the M4A is a distribution copy you can regenerate at any time.

Lossy vs lossless audio
WAV and FLAC are lossless — they preserve the original waveform exactly (FLAC is compressed, WAV is not). MP3, M4A (AAC) and OGG are lossy: they shrink the file by discarding inaudible detail, and the quality preset controls the bitrate. Converting a lossy file to a lossless format can't recover quality that was already lost. One special case: converting to M4A when the source is already AAC just repackages the container (a lossless remux) — instant and bit-exact.
