OBS records MKV for crash safety; MP3 is how you ship the audio
OBS defaults to MKV because a recording interrupted by a crash stays playable, which is why so many game captures, webinars, and stream archives pile up in this container. The problem surfaces afterward: podcast hosts, phone players, and audio editors have no use for a multi-gigabyte MKV.
Extracting to MP3 closes that gap. A recorded webinar becomes commute-friendly listening, and the sound of a live session can feed a podcast pipeline without dragging the video along. At 192kbps, the audio of a one-hour session weighs about 86MB, a fraction of the recording it came from.
AAC and Opus into MP3: budgeting for one lossy generation
MKV recordings almost always hold AAC (the OBS default, typically 160kbps) or Opus, so MP3 output means a second lossy encode. The way to keep it inaudible is headroom: 192kbps for speech-heavy material, 256kbps when music or game sound matters. Dropping below the source bitrate is where transcoding artifacts start to show.
Mind the input size before starting. A screen-share webinar recorded around 2Mbps grows by roughly 15MB per minute, so a quarter hour approaches the 200MB practical ceiling; game captures at 8Mbps and up reach it within three to four minutes. For long sessions, export just the segment you need from your editor, then convert that.
How to use it

Lossy vs lossless audio
WAV and FLAC are lossless — they preserve the original waveform exactly (FLAC is compressed, WAV is not). MP3, M4A (AAC) and OGG are lossy: they shrink the file by discarding inaudible detail, and the quality preset controls the bitrate. Converting a lossy file to a lossless format can't recover quality that was already lost. One special case: converting to M4A when the source is already AAC just repackages the container (a lossless remux) — instant and bit-exact.
